The border closure between the United States and Canada extended until January 21

The Canadian government announced that the border between the United States and Canada will remain closed to all unnecessary movements for at least another month, until January 21, to limit the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic .

The United States closed its borders with Mexico and Canada on 20 and 21 March, respectively, and since then this decision will be renewed monthly.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said during a press conference that the new extension between the two northern neighbors "will help protect people on both sides of the border."

It will only be permitted to continue commercial exchanges and trips that are considered essential.

The border between the United States and Canada is 8,900 km long and is the longest in the world.

Before the pandemic, an average of 400,000 people each day crossed the Canadian-American border.

The new one-month extension comes at a time when the countries are fighting a second wave of the virus that has killed more than 13,000 people in Canada and about 292,000 in the United States, which is the country most affected by the pandemic in the world.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) decided in March to close the borders of the United States with its two neighbors in order to limit the spread of the deadly virus.
