Government media in Gaza: 34 journalists were martyred since the start of Israel’s aggression

Today, Friday, October 27, 2023, the Government Media Office announced that 34 journalists were martyred, dozens of them were injured, and the headquarters of 50 media organizations were bombed since the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on October 7.

The office said in a press statement, “The occupation’s aggression is becoming more ferocious day after day, committing the most heinous crimes and massacres against civilians in general and journalists in particular, by directly targeting them, destroying their homes above their heads and the heads of their families, and demolishing their media institutions, without the occupation being deterred by international and Arab organizations.”

He called on all concerned international bodies to intervene to stop this aggression, and to provide protection for journalists and media institutions in Palestine to enable them to carry out their work.

The statement stated that targeting civilians and journalists in particular has become a blow to the provisions of international humanitarian law and Article 4 of the Geneva Law, which stipulates the protection of civilians and journalists, especially during their media coverage in disputed areas.

The office pointed out that the occupation’s targeting of journalists means that it ignores all conventions, especially Security Council Resolution (2222), which stipulates the protection of journalists during armed conflicts.

He believed that the impunity of the occupation encouraged it to continue committing these crimes, calling on the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression at the United Nations and international human rights institutions to investigate the crimes of the Israeli occupation against media freedoms in Palestine, and to bring their perpetrators and all those involved to justice as the only way to put an end to them.
