Amnesty International Urges Serious Action to Stop Genocide and Starvation in Gaza

Amnesty International has called on all international actors, especially the European Union, to take concrete and urgent steps to halt what it described as genocide being carried out by Israel against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking on Monday, Amnesty’s Secretary-General Agnès Callamard stated that the genocide in Gaza is being committed through military assaults and starvation tactics that have left the entire territory “completely devoid of food.”

Callamard urged the international community to pressure Israel to allow the entry of food, water, and medicine into Gaza and to hold those responsible for war crimes and acts of genocide accountable.

She noted that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened dramatically since Israel imposed a full blockade on the territory starting March 2, 2025. The situation has further deteriorated following the resumption of the Israeli military offensive on March 18.

“The alarm is sounding in Gaza,” she warned. “People are suffering from extreme shortages of food, water, and medicine. The World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and all UN and humanitarian agencies are raising the alarm: there is no food left in Gaza.”

Callamard described the conditions across the Gaza Strip as “utterly terrifying,” emphasizing that “this is a genocide unfolding in full view of the world.”

On Sunday, the Government Media Office in Gaza issued a renewed warning of an imminent humanitarian catastrophe, citing the ongoing closure of all crossings and the intensifying blockade that has lasted over 64 consecutive days.

It stressed that Israel’s deliberate starvation campaign against Gaza’s children—through blocking food and medical supplies—constitutes a full-fledged crime of genocide under international law. The office also condemned what it called the “shameful international silence.”

UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini also warned that the blockade will continue to "silently kill" countless children and women each day, in addition to those dying under Israeli bombardment.
