Twitter expands its ban on "hate speech"

As concerns over the emerging Corona virus continue to escalate, Twitter on Thursday expanded its ban on "hate speech" to include disease.

The Twitter security and safety team said in a post on its official account that it would apply a rule banning hate speech targeting religious groups to comments affecting people because of "age, disability or disease".

"Our main focus is on tackling the threat of violence in real life, and research shows that inhuman words increase this risk."

Twitter will delete tweets that violate these rules, which were previously published, and the platform relies on users to report the violating comments.

Examples of irregular tweets include publications that describe people with the disease as "rats contaminating everyone around them" or who have a specific disability as "a minimum population".

This platform and other social networks are struggling to remove content that contains hate and offensive speeches while ensuring that spaces remain available to everyone.
