UN Security Council President calls for "protection of civilians"

The current president of the UN Security Council called on South African Ambassador Jerry Mathews on Wednesday to "protect civilians" and "exercise maximum restraint" in its military operations in Syria.

The president of the council for the month of October expressed the hope that a meeting of this body as soon as possible, pointing out that it is up to those who draft resolutions on Syria to call such a meeting.

Kuwait, Belgium and Germany are drafting a text on humanitarian assistance.

The diplomat was speaking ahead of a UN Security Council meeting on the Democratic Republic of Congo.
