Macaron announces a meeting with Trump on Iran at the G20 summit

French President Emmanuel Macaron said on Monday he would meet with his US counterpart Donald Trump "privately" on the sidelines of the Group of Twenty summit this weekend in Japan to discuss the Iranian issue.

"I am going to hold a private meeting with President Trump on the sidelines of the G-20," McCron said in a press statement at the end of the Mediterranean summit in Marseille.

The French President: "I sent the advisers of diplomat Emmanuel Bonn last week, to Iran."

France has recently stepped up contacts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran, and to avoid any possible military conflict between the two countries.

A statement issued by the French presidency last week confirms that Bonn met with a number of Iranian leaders, "with the aim of contributing to the easing of tension in the region."

On the other hand, French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said he "talked a lot" to the Iranian file during a meeting with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev on Monday in the city of Haver in western France.

The French official stressed "the importance of avoiding the situation out of control, and work to reduce the escalation, especially through dialogue."

French Secretary of State for European Affairs Amélie de Munchalan was quoted as saying that "militancy and dangerous rhetoric by both sides in the whole region."

Tensions between the United States and Iran rose sharply when Washington accused Tehran of attacking tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
