India imposes tariffs on some American goods

India _ Agencies

India plans to introduce tariff lifting on some goods imported from the United States of America on Sept. 18.The move comes on the part of New Delhi in response to Washington's refusal to exempt it from new tariffs imposed by the United States.

India decided in June to increase the import tax from Aug. 4 to some US products, including walnuts and apples, and then postponed the move.

Officials from New Delhi and Washington, including Foreign minister Mike Buuso and Defense Jim Mathis, are scheduled to hold a series of meetings, including strategic talks with their Indian counterparts in September, Reuters reported.

The trade volume between the two sides reached 115 billion dollars in 2016, but the Trump administration wants to reduce its deficit with India, which amounts to 31 billion dollars, and urges New Delhi to ease trade barriers.

In June, New Delhi, the world's largest importer of almond, adopted a decision to increase import tariffs on the commodity by 20 percent, joining the European Union and China in responding to Trump's tariff increases on imported steel and aluminium, and planning to charge 120 percent on nut imports too.
