Poland announced that its foreign ministry had summoned the French ambassador in Warsaw on Friday, after President Emmanuel Macron's comments accusing the Polish prime minister of being a "right-wing extremist anti-Semitic."
"Following the statements received in the interview of the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, with Le Parisien, the (Polish) Minister Zbigniew Rau decided to summon the French ambassador," the Polish foreign ministry said on Twitter.
In an interview with Le Parisien newspaper Thursday, the French President accused Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki of being a "right-wing extremist anti-Semitic," after he also accused him of "interfering in the French political campaign," citing his closeness to his rival in the presidential elections, far-right candidate Marine Le Pen.
Macron's comments came in response to the populist nationalist Polish prime minister, who attacked him on Monday over the numerous phone conversations he had with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
"President Macron, how many times have you negotiated with Putin, what did you get?" Morawiecki said Monday. We do not negotiate with criminals or negotiate with them. Criminals must be fought.”
"No one negotiated with Hitler," added Morawiecki, leader of the ruling Law and Justice party. Would you have negotiated with Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot?”, accusing some European leaders of “procrastination” and of adopting “wooden language.”
On Friday, a Polish government spokesman described Macron's comments as "incomprehensible" and considered them part of the "political sentiments that accompany every election campaign."
Spokesman Piotr Mueller told reporters, "Talking about the Polish prime minister in the context of anti-Semitism is simply false and irrelevant to reality."
"I hope the election campaign in France will calm down a little bit, and then the French president will speak differently and really stick to historical facts," he added.
