“Madar” report: The settlers intensified their attacks on Palestinian land and civilians last year

The “Madar Strategic Report 2022 – The Israeli Scene 2021” confirmed that the settlers intensified their methods during 2021 in expanding their settlement activity and their attacks on Palestinian land and citizens.

This came during the launch of the Palestinian Center for Israeli Studies (MADAR) its annual strategic report, during a conference held today, Monday, at its headquarters in Ramallah.

The report indicated that the methods used by the settlers included: attempts by the settlement regional councils and settlement associations active in the field of settlement expansion to establish new outposts to obtain the approval of the official Israeli authorities, pastoral activity by settlers, repeated clashes between settlers and Israeli security services for settlement expansion, and the continuation of the settlers’ revenge campaigns On the Palestinian villages, and their continuous interception and assault on the vehicles of our people.

He added that since the Trump administration arrived at the White House in 2016, settlement projects have been strengthened, especially in Area C and Jerusalem, noting that at the end of 2021, the percentage of settlers in the West Bank reached about 14.4% of the total population of the West Bank, and about 5% Of the total number of Israelis.

Regarding the number of settlers, the report indicated that estimates suggest that their number in the West Bank reached about 460,000 at the end of 2021, in addition to about 375,000 within the borders of East Jerusalem, while settlers in the West Bank are distributed over about 132 settlements and 140 outposts.

In its analysis of the Israeli scene in 2021, the report attached importance to international reports linking Israel and apartheid, and considered by the “apartheid” state, focused on the increasing number of settlements.

He highlighted seven main axes: the Israel and the Palestinian issue, the internal political/partisan axis, the foreign relations axis, the security/military axis, the economic axis, the social axis, and finally the Palestinians in Israel axis.  

The report also talked about the gift of Jerusalem, and the growing role of the settlers and their political currents in imposing their agendas specifically with regard to Jerusalem, and touched on the most prominent event with regard to the Israeli prisons and the issue of prisoners, which was represented by the ability of six prisoners to extract their freedom from Gilboa prison in September of last year.

The report stated that the occupation forces arrested during the year 2021 about 8000 Palestinians, including more than 1,300 minors and children, and 184 women, while issuing 1,595 administrative detention orders. A female captive (including a minor girl), more than 160 children, and more than 500 administrative detainees, while the number of martyred prisoners reached 227 after the martyrdom of Sami Al-Omour and Hussein Masalma during the year 2021.

The lecturer in the master’s programs in democracy, human rights and Arab studies at Birzeit University, George Jaqman, stressed in his comment, through the “Zoom” application, the importance of international reports linking Israel and apartheid, considering that it is the beginning of a long road that requires a lot of work within a new confrontation project, It is based on elements related to people's interests, opposes the theft of land, supports the boycott movement in the world by building global networks through the Palestinian communities, and adopts a language of discourse that the world understands.  

The report also dealt with the dynamics of the Russian-Ukrainian crisis and the Israeli deal with it, Israel’s relationship with the new US administration, the Israeli government “the government of change” and the context of its formation depending on a fragile alliance after 12 years of Benjamin Netanyahu’s rule, and a severe political crisis represented in four electoral rounds within two years .

It is noteworthy that the “Madar” report is issued annually and monitors and analyzes the most important developments and developments in the Israeli arena during the past year, and attempts to anticipate the direction of developments in the coming period, especially in terms of their impact on the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people.

The report was edited by the Director of Madar, Hunaida Ghanem, and a group of specialized researchers and observers of Israeli affairs participated in the preparation of the report, namely: Walid Habas, Abdel Qader Badawi, Muhannad Mustafa, Antoine Shalhat, Fadi Nahas, Asas Al-Atrash, Areen Hawari, and Ahmed Amara.
