United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday announced the allocation of $20 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to meet urgent needs in Ukraine amid a military conflict with Russia.
"Today I announce that we will immediately allocate $20 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to meet urgent needs," Guterres told reporters at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
He explained that UN staff work on both sides of the line of contact "always guided by the principles of neutrality, humanity and independence."
"We provide life-saving humanitarian relief to people in need, regardless of who they are or where they are," he said.
"Protecting civilians should be the priority," he added. International humanitarian law and human rights must also be adhered to.”
