Trump proposes amnesty for Capitol attackers

Former US President Donald Trump floated the idea of pardoning some of the Capitol attackers on January 6, 2021, if he wins the next presidential election in 2024.

"If I run and win, we will fairly address the situation of those (who attacked Capitol Hill) on January 6," the Republican billionaire said Saturday during a meeting with his supporters in Conroy, Texas.

"If it is necessary to pardon, we will grant them pardon, because they are treated in a highly unfair manner," he added.

Since January 6, 2021, more than 725 people have been arrested, including members of the "Proud Boys", "Oath Keepers" and "Three Percentages" groups, as well as charges of participating in this unprecedented attack that led to Five people were killed.

Trump's supporters had tried to storm the headquarters of Congress, and some of them managed to enter it during the House's approval of Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election.

On January 13, Stuart Rhodes, 56, the founder of the "Oath Keepers" group, one of the most prominent American far-right groups, was charged with "sowing sedition" with ten other members of the organization.

In parallel, a parliamentary committee is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the attack and whether Trump or one of those close to him played a role in encouraging it.

So far, the committee has issued several subpoenas to a number of key figures close to Trump, and his daughter, Ivanka, has been called to testify.

Representatives are racing against time because they want to publish their conclusions before the midterm elections that will be held less than a year ago, with Democrats fearing that Republicans will regain control of the House of Representatives and end the investigation.
