The European Union announces a contribution of 92 million euros to support UNRWA operations

The European Union announced today, Monday, the disbursement of an important payment of 92 million euros to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees “UNRWA”.

High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the Commission, Josep Borrell said: “We are determined to support UNRWA politically and financially, including through a reliable long-term relationship. The Agency plays an essential role in providing vital services to millions of Palestine refugees and stabilizing the region. Our support for UNRWA is not only a humanitarian duty, but helps keep the chances of a lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians alive, as UNRWA services remain essential to contributing to a viable two-state solution, including a just, agreed and realistic solution to the refugee issue.”

In turn, EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhely, said: “The EU is a reliable and predictable partner, and the largest donor to UNRWA that plays a role in the stability of the region, and should continue to do so with a clear focus on its core mandate. We will not rule out any avenue when looking for innovative ways to find a sustainable financing model. Meanwhile, others need to step up their efforts and join the European Union and its member states in providing predictable multi-year funding. We will continue to work with UNRWA to strengthen its governance systems and help increase transparency and sound management, and we remain deeply committed to enhancing the quality of education for Palestinian children and ensuring full compliance with UNESCO standards in educational materials.”

This funding constitutes the annual financial assistance provided by the European Union to UNRWA, and will contribute to maintaining basic living conditions and supporting human development for Palestine refugees by ensuring the continuity of basic services by supporting the UNRWA program budget with an amount of (€90 million) and by supporting UNRWA reforms with an amount of (€2 million) euro).
