The founder of the “Telegram” messaging application said today, Tuesday, that the application gained more than 70 million new users during the Facebook outage on Monday.
People around the world were without major messaging services for nearly six hours, and the cause of the outage was largely unknown.
Facebook attributed the service outage to a change that resulted in a defect in the setup and configuration system, which prevented 3.5 billion users from accessing services such as WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
"The daily growth rate of the Telegram application has exceeded the normal rate in large numbers, and we have received more than 70 million users from other platforms in one day," Durov wrote on his channel on "Telegram".
Durov said some users in the Americas may have experienced slow service, with millions rushing to sign up at the same time, but the service worked as usual for the majority.
EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said the outage showed the implications of relying on a few big players and underlined the need for more competitors.
Russia said the incident showed Moscow was right to develop its own sovereign internet and social media platforms.
