European Union: Israel´s decision to build new settlement units contradicts international law

A spokesman for the European Union said, “Israel's recent decision to go ahead with plans to approve the construction of nearly 800 new settlement units in the West Bank contradicts international law and further undermines the prospects for a viable two-state solution.” .

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the European Union called on the Israeli government to suspend the ongoing bidding process for building housing units for a completely new settlement in "Givat Hamatos".

The Union had repeatedly called on Israel to end all settlement activities and to dismantle the outposts established since March 2001.

He stressed that the European Union’s position remains consistent, which is that settlements are illegal under international law.

The European Union also renewed its call on the parties to avoid unilateral steps that could undermine the two-state solution.

The spokesperson called on the Israeli government to reverse these decisions regarding settlements and show leadership to rebuild confidence between the two parties, for the eventual resumption of meaningful Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.
