Launch of the "Sentinel 6" Earth observation satellite into space

The Sentinel 6 satellite, Michael Freilich, which is supposed to monitor and map Earth's oceans, has been successfully launched into space.

It was launched on Saturday morning from a bomber at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The US Space Agency (NASA) broadcast the launch live on its website.

The satellite will accurately monitor changes in sea levels as a dangerous consequence of climate change.

The mission is being conducted in cooperation with NASA, the European Space Agency, the European Meteorological Organization and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The satellite will be controlled from a center at the European Meteorological Organization in Darmstadt, Germany, as part of the Copernicus program for Earth observation.
