UNRWA: We need $ 1.2 billion to fund our operations in 2019

UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Crennopoul said the agency aims to raise $ 1.2 billion this year to finance its operations in the Middle East, representing the same amount that the agency was able to collect last year,

"If we keep and keep each donor on the level of its contribution in 2018, we will be able to cover the financial needs of UNRWA," he added.

He said at a press conference that part of this appeal had already been achieved, with UNRWA covering the first five months of 2019 "in a fairly stable manner" thanks to donor payments and "commitments and contributions".

However, he noted that in June, UNRWA began recording deficient levels, appealing to donors to help the agency consolidate efforts during the summer to ensure that its schools were able to open on time in September.

Currently, UNRWA runs an educational system of some 700 schools for about half a million boys and girls. It also manages about 140 health centers, which already have about 8.5 million patient visits.

In particular, he noted that while UNRWA provides food aid to about one million people in the Gaza Strip, who account for half of the population, "any imbalance in this line" will be a problem for the stability of the region.

And UNRWA, established in 1949, is mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5.4 million registered Palestine refugees in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Its services include education, health care, relief, social services, infrastructure, camp improvement and microcredit.
