International Committee: 53 journalists killed in 2018

The number of journalists killed this year has doubled, according to an annual report of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), where the New York-based organization found that 34 journalists were killed because of their work until the day (December 14, December) while at least 53 journalists were killed in general, and through eight  Ten murders of 47 deaths documented by the Commission in 2017.

The report indicates that some journalists died as a result of being on dangerous missions, or received a bullet during the exchange of gunfire.

 One of the most prominent names shown in the report is Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who was killed in the Turkish capital of Istanbul.

According to the report, the highest homicide rate for journalists was in Afghanistan, where 13 journalists were killed, some in successive bombings by suicide bombers, and militant Islamist groups claimed responsibility.

The report states that the deadliest and most widespread attack on the media occurred in the United States (June 28, 2018), when a gunman in Annapolis, Maryland, opened fire in a news room and shot four journalists, and the man threatened the newspaper after he lost a libel suit.

At least four journalists were killed in Mexico and two in Brazil, and two Palestinian journalists were martyred by the occupying forces during demonstrations in the Gaza Strip, according to the report.

According to the report, the smallest number of journalists have been killed since 2011 and three died in Yemen and in Syria, with nine deaths compared with 31 in 2012.
