North Korea has said to the United States that sanctions and pressure--as is evident from the past--will not work to force the state to take a step on its nuclear program.

"The United States must realize before it is too late that the (maximum pressure) will not work against us and take a sincere approach to the implementation of the statement," the North Korean Central News Agency quoted a statement by the Director of Policy research at the Institute of American Studies of the North Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States, issued in Singapore, the Bloomberg News agency reported Sunday.

"President Donald Trump is taking advantage of every possible opportunity to demonstrate his desire to improve relations between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the United States," the statement said.

"Instead, the foreign Ministry is determined to return the DPRK and United States relations back to their situation last year, when the crossfire was overshadowed by the exchange of gunfire," the statement said.

North Korea has been proposing to improve relations on a step-by-step approach by  "Solving what is possible step by stage, by prioritizing confidence-building," according to the statement.
