Criticism of Trump the day after his call to dispense with the US Constitution

The American political class on Sunday strongly condemned former President Donald Trump's call on Saturday to dispense with the constitution to reconsider the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, which was won by Joe Biden.

Trump renewed his baseless allegations of massive ballot fraud, saying on his social network TruthSocial Saturday that "fraud and deception of this kind on a large scale enable all rules, regulations, and articles, including those in the Constitution, to be rescinded."

The White House quickly denounced this statement.

"The United States Constitution is a sacred document that for 200 years has guaranteed liberty and the rule of law in our beautiful country," presidential spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement Saturday.

"Attacking the constitution and everything it represents is contrary to the spirit of our country and must be condemned," he added, adding, "You cannot only love America when it wins."

Members of Congress from both parties on Sunday condemned the former president's statement, who recently announced his intention to run for the 2024 presidential election.

"Last week he was having dinner with anti-Semites. Now he's calling for an end to constitutional democracy in America," Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer tweeted.

Schumer referred to a dinner at Donald Trump's residence in Florida attended by Nick Fuentes, a white supremacist and Holocaust denier.

Schumer added that Donald Trump "is out of control and a threat to our democracy."

When asked about Trump's statements on Fox News, former Vice President Mike Pence refrained from condemning them, although he had previously distanced himself from the American billionaire since the attack on the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.

"Candidates who focus on the past, Especially those who focus on questioning the last election, did not fare well in last month's midterm elections," he said.

Meanwhile, John Bolton, Trump's former national security adviser, was condemned, and said in a tweet, "All true conservatives should oppose his 2024 presidential campaign."
