Survey results: 60% of the people of the Gaza Strip suffer from food insecurity

The results of the Survey of Social, Economic Conditions and Food Security, which provides an analysis of the latest developments in the food security scene during the period between 2020 and 2021, showed that 60% of West Bank households were food secure, while 60% of households were The Gaza Strip suffers from moderate or severe food insecurity.

This came in a workshop launching the results of the survey of social and economic conditions and food security at the Palestinian Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS), today, Thursday, in the presence of the Minister of Social Development Ahmed Majdalani, the country director of the World Food Program in Palestine (WFP) Samer Abdel Jaber, and the director of the organization’s office Food and Agriculture of the United Nations (FAO) Ciro Fiorillo, and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture Abdullah Lahluh.

Majdalani stressed that the government, despite the practices of the occupation and its control over most agricultural lands and water sources, is making great efforts to achieve food sovereignty and provide food security, based on the national development plan, and by allocating a policy priority related to the advancement of agriculture and rural communities.

He stressed the need for food security governance and the development of a strategic framework for it at the national level, and for all agencies and international organizations to assume their responsibilities in providing food security to the people under occupation, and the need to establish a Food and Nutrition Security Council that would work to increase coordination and distribute roles between institutions related to the issue .

The report reviewed the results of surveys of economic and social conditions and food security in Palestine during the year 2021, which provides an analysis of the latest developments in the food security scene during the period between 2020 and 2021.

The results of the report indicated that during the year 2021 the number of food-secure Palestinian families was less than half the number of Palestinian families, with vast regional differences between the West Bank and Gaza Strip, while 60% of the families in the West Bank were food secure, 60% of the families in the Gaza Strip You are moderately or severely food insecure. The report also shows that the food security situation between 2018 and 2021 has deteriorated more than before, whether at the national or regional level.
