Guterres: Settlements, demolitions and evictions fuel despair and hostility

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed that the economic and security conditions are deteriorating throughout the occupied Palestinian territories, and Palestinians are suffering from high levels of dispossession, violence and insecurity.

In his speech during the opening of the 2022 session of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, last night, Guterres said that the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, still constitutes a major challenge to international peace and security, especially since the promise of the independence of the Palestinian state has not been fulfilled.

"We urgently need to intensify collective efforts to resolve the conflict and end the occupation, in line with United Nations resolutions, international law and bilateral agreements," he added.

He reiterated that the desired goal is to create an independent, viable and sovereign Palestinian state, living side by side with Israel in peace, within secure and recognized borders on the basis of the pre-1967 lines with Jerusalem as the common capital.

He stressed the need to stop unilateral steps and illegal measures, noting that incitement to violence will not lead to anything and must be rejected by everyone.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed his concern about the continuation of violence throughout the occupied Palestinian territories, including settler violence and military operations, which led to many deaths.

He pointed out that settlement activity, demolitions and evictions, including in East Jerusalem, are still continuing, which undermines international humanitarian law and human rights law, fuels despair and hostility, and reduces the prospects for a negotiated solution.

He stressed that all settlement activities are illegal and must stop.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations considered that the continuation of human rights violations against the Palestinians greatly impede their ability to live in safety and develop their societies and economies, calling for maintaining the status quo in the holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem.
