A 4-minute daily habit that promotes a long, healthy life does not include diet or exercise

Various studies have demonstrated that sticking to a range of healthy lifestyle decisions, such as diet and exercise, is an integral part of reducing life-threatening risks.

But some research has also found new ways to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease that take no more than four minutes and don't involve exertion or changing what you eat.

This simple method is to brush the teeth twice daily.

In a study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers sought to examine whether self-reported brushing behavior was associated with cardiovascular disease and inflammatory markers.

They relied on data from the Scottish Health Survey, where researchers assessed oral health behavior in surveys of 11,869 men and women with an average age of 50 years.

The team determined the frequency of brushing the participants' teeth twice a day, once a day, or irregular brushing once a day.

The nurses collected information on medical history, family history of cardiovascular disease, blood pressure and blood samples.

There were a total of 555 cases of cardiovascular disease over 8.1 years of follow-up, of which 170 were fatal.

Participants who reported poor oral hygiene (never/rarely brushed their teeth) had an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Data suggests that brushing your teeth twice daily can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The researchers concluded that "poor oral hygiene is associated with higher levels of cardiovascular disease risk and lower inflammation, although the causal nature of this association has not yet been determined."

The NHS advises: "Brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day for about two minutes to help keep your teeth and mouth healthy."

Experts pointed out that it does not matter if you use an electric or manual toothbrush, because “both are equally good, as long as you clean all surfaces of your teeth and use a fluoride toothpaste. But some people find it easier to brush their teeth well with an electric toothbrush.”

And the health authority continued: "Ensuring that you brush your teeth well at least twice a day is more important than the type of brush you use."
