Three people charged with preparing for a "terrorist" attack in Denmark

The Danish judiciary on Tuesday charged two men, aged 22 and 23, with "preparing a terrorist attack" and a 39-year-old woman.

And the Ministry of Justice announced in a statement that “the prosecution believes that the three people obtained various chemicals and equipment for the purpose of making one or more bombs that they were going to use to carry out a terrorist attack in an unknown location, in Denmark or abroad,” without revealing the possible targets.

The three people, from Copenhagen, were arrested and detained in December 2019.

"We believe their plans failed when the two men were arrested by the police," Prosecutor Lise-Lote Nilas said.

The woman, who is also prosecuted for financing and promoting terrorism, and one of the men, who have dual citizenships, risk being stripped of their Danish citizenship if convicted.

The trial is scheduled to begin in early November.

In recent years, Danish intelligence has thwarted many terrorist attacks, and it considers that the risk of a terrorist attack in the country is still "high", six years after a double Islamist-motivated attack in Copenhagen that killed two people.

At the end of September, in a similar case, the Danish judiciary sentenced a 24-year-old man to 10 years in prison and stripped of Danish citizenship who was convicted of “preparing a terrorist attack”.
