Diplomatic sources announced the death of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Annan was 80 years old and became the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Annan presided over the international body from 1997 to 2006.
He subsequently served as the United Nations special envoy to Syria, leading international efforts to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
