The US State Department announced, Thursday, that it urges Israel to refrain from deporting Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah area of ​​East Jerusalem.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in response to a question from Jerusalem during his press conference about whether the United States is pressuring the Palestinians to accept a compromise that grants them the right to reside as tenants: “We believe that the proposal submitted by the Israeli court on August 2, and they should The Israeli and Palestinian sides will study it and decide for themselves.”
Price declined to respond to Jerusalem´s question whether any US diplomat has met or contacted the Palestinians about any "compromise" in the Sheikh Jarrah affair.
According to Israeli media, Israeli government agencies approached the US administration with a proposal to pressure the Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah, east of Jerusalem, to adopt the compromise presented by the Supreme Court judges the day before yesterday. This is due to an assessment that the operation may lead to a resolution of the confrontation and an easing of international tension over a possible eviction of families. Judges Yitzhak Amit, Erez and Noam Solberg, suggested that the residents remain in their homes as protected tenants of the first generation, that is, their children and grandchildren can stay in the homes.
According to the proposal, they will pay 1,500 shekels per year to the Nahalat Shimon company, which has requested their evacuation and the settlement of Jews in their place. The Palestinians and the company had reservations about this proposal, and the judges ordered the families to submit a list of the names of the rights holders over the real estate within seven days so that they could formulate an agreement between the two parties.
According to Israeli sources, Israel is concerned that the court´s decision will put Israel in the center of an unprecedented political confrontation, and in front of friendly countries as well.
