Washington accuses Indonesia of violating sanctions on Iran

The US Justice Department accused an Indonesian citizen on Tuesday of violating sanctions on Iran by providing new and renewed planes worth millions of dollars to Iranian company Mahan, a blacklist.

According to the indictment submitted by the ministry to a federal court in Washington, Suncaro Contegoro, president of "BTSS Aero Sport", issued pieces of US-made aircraft to Mahan in violation of the sanctions between 2011 and 2018.

Contjoro also shipped aircraft parts to the United States for repair, and then reloaded to Iran, according to the regulations.

The list listed eight counts of breach of sanctions, money laundering, and false statements against Contegoro and his company and two other Indonesian companies linked to a violation of US export laws.

She added that Contagoro was charging Mahan millions of dollars after obtaining aircraft parts that were maintained in the United States, and he concealed Iran´s participation in this by shipping the parts through Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand.

American sanctions prohibit the provision of Iranian products to Iran without specific permission from the US Treasury Department, which administers the sanctions.

The Ministry of Treasury imposed sanctions on Mahan Aviation in 2011 because of its links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Mahan, one of Iran´s leading airlines, operates several Boeing and other American aircraft, and finds it difficult to continue its activities due to a lack of aircraft parts.
