The US National Security Council, led by John Bolton, asked the Pentagon to present military options to the White House to strike Iran after gunmen attacked the Baghdad diplomatic district in September, The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday quoting current and former officials who did not identify themselves.
The Pentagon responded to the National Security Council´s request to gather options for a strike against Iran, officials said.
It was not clear whether the proposals had already been submitted to the White House and whether Trump knew about the request and whether serious plans had been made for a US strike against Iran, the Bloomberg news agency reported on Tuesday.
Garrett Marquez, spokesman for the US National Security Council, said the council "is coordinating policies and giving the president options to anticipate and respond to a range of threats."
"We continue to review the situation of our staff in the wake of attempts to attack our embassy in Baghdad and our consulate in Basra and we will consider a range of options to maintain their safety and our interests," Marquez said.
