The partial closure of the US government on Friday was the longest ever in its history, marking a 21-day record.
There is no sign of progress to end the deadlock that has led to the closure of museums and parks and the disruption of hundreds of thousands of federal government employees.
For the first time, many employees do not get paid on Friday.
If the closure extends to Saturday, it will be longer than the 1995-96 closure, the longest in US history.
Both closures began due to government spending.
The partial closure was triggered by US President Donald Trump´s request from Congress to approve $ 5.7 billion to build a wall along the US-Mexico border.
Trump says construction of the wall is necessary for national security, while Democrats refuse to finance it, calling it inefficient and wasting taxpayers´ money.
