The results of the examination for the detection of infection with the new Corona virus were positive for the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, according to what his media office announced on Monday, indicating that the president feels fine.
And the presidency announced in a statement that Zelensky, 42, whose wife also contracted the disease for months, "had tested positive for Covid-19." The statement added that the president "feels fine and will continue to exercise his duties remotely, while isolating himself."
He wrote on Facebook, "My temperature is 37.5 degrees Celsius. Most of the people recover from Covid-19 and I am confident that I will recover too."
And his office chief Andrei Armak announced on Facebook that he had also tested positive for corona.
"I feel fine," he said, stressing that he would participate in a quadripartite video conference of the advisers of the Ukrainian, Russian, French and German heads of state on the peace process in eastern Ukraine.
In June, Zelensky announced in an interview that he had considered deliberately contracting Covid-19 to show his citizens that this disease was "terrifying" but not as dangerous as the "plague." But his aides convinced him to abandon this idea.
And the former Soviet Republic, which has a population of 40 million and a ramshackle health system, has recorded in recent weeks a huge rise in cases, with thousands of new infections daily.
Last week, Health Minister Maxim Stepanov warned that the country was "close to a health disaster" due to the lack of the necessary beds and medical personnel.
And on Monday, he announced the suspension of all previously scheduled surgeries in the country, as the authorities considered the possibility of imposing additional restrictions on the population every weekend to stop the spread of the epidemic.
With these measures, only the necessary stores such as food stores, pharmacies and public transportation will continue to operate.
The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in Ukraine is 470,000, including 8,687 deaths.
