The United States president, Donald Trump, has agreed to accept the resignation of US Permanent Representative to the United nations, Nikki haile, explaining that she will officially leave office late this year.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Haile on tuesday, Trump said she had informed him of her wish to leave her post about half a year ago, saying she wanted to take a break after a one or two-year term.
The US president said Haley would officially leave her post at the end of this year, while stressing that she was "doing a great job" as a permanent U.S. delegate to the United Nations.
The White House said he hoped Haley would return to work in another position, adding: "you can choose it yourself."
Trump said he would announce the appointment of the new US delegate to the world Organization within two or three weeks.
Earlier in the day, a number of media outlets reported that Haile had resigned directly to the US president, who accepted it.
The website, which was the first to convey the news, according to two sources familiar with the talks between Haile and trump, noted that this development "shocked a number of senior foreign policy officials" in the US Administration.
haile, a member of the Republican Party and the province of South Carolina from 2011 to 2017, was the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations on January 27, 2017, and is the closest official to Trump.
