Netanyahu officially announces the formation of a new government in Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially announced on Wednesday evening that he had succeeded in forming a new government, ending nearly 18 months of political stalemate.

This came in official messages sent by Netanyahu to Benny Gantz, the head of the Blue and White party, in his capacity as interim speaker and President Reuven Rivlin, according to the Israel Broadcasting Corporation.

Gantz demanded that the Knesset be called for a vote of confidence, according to the Israel Broadcasting Corporation.

The new government is due to be sworn in after receiving the confidence of legislators during the full Knesset session, which will start at 6 pm tomorrow, Thursday, local time.

The Knesset will also vote on a new president. The Likud MK, Yariv Levin, who was chosen as the Speaker of the Knesset, will be succeeded by Gantz, who resigned last night from the Knesset leadership.

The new cabinet´s swearing in of the government means an end to the paralysis that has paralyzed political life in Israel for more than a year and led it to hold three elections.

Under Netanyahu and Gantz’s agreement to form a national unity government, Netanyahu will take over as prime minister for 18 months before handing over to Gantz in October 2021.
