Sweden has officially crossed the threshold of 3,000 deaths from the emerging corona virus, health authorities announced Thursday.
And recorded in the Kingdom of Sweden 99 new deaths within 24 hours of the emerging corona virus, bringing the total to 3040 deaths out of 24,623 confirmed infections.
Sweden, with a population of 10.3 million, has taken less stringent measures than most European countries to contain the spread of the virus.
The public health agency said the epidemic has not yet exhausted the capacity of Swedish hospitals to treat patients.
"The findings show that we have succeeded, to a large extent, in keeping (the level of the virus outbreak) within limits that the health system can deal with," epidemiologist Anders Tegnell said at a press conference.
Since the beginning of the crisis, 1,645 people have been placed in intensive care.
Unlike other Scandinavian countries that adopted a strategy based on the imposition of some isolation measures, Sweden refrained from quarantining the population on the grounds that strict measures were not effective enough to justify their impact on society.
I am satisfied with urging people to act responsibly and adhere to official recommendations, without exceptional closing procedures. The gatherings prevented more than 50 people as well as visits to the homes of the elderly.
On Thursday, Sweden records 301 deaths for every million residents, according to the WorldMeter website to collect statistical data. In Denmark, the same rate is 87, in Finland 46 and in Norway 40.
It remains, however, lower than Belgium, which records 726 deaths per million residents, Spain (558) and Italy (491).
