United Nations: global tourism may drop by 80% by the end of the year

A World Tourism Organization report published today indicated that the global numbers of tourists may decrease by up to 80% by the end of the year.

According to the latest "barometer of global tourism", prepared by the World Tourism Organization, the Corona pandemic has already caused a 22% drop in the number of tourists in the first quarter of this year.

In March alone, the number of tourists decreased by 57% after the closures and travel restrictions in many countries.

The report showed that the decline in the number of international tourists by 67 million in the three months to March already means losses of 80 billion dollars. The organization said it was likely to turn worse for the tourism industry. She formulated possible scenarios for the future.

The organization expected that if travel restrictions were lifted in early July, the annual numbers of tourists would decrease by 58% from the year, and that this percentage would increase to 70% if the restrictions continued until early September and 78% if they continued until early December Dec.

If the forecasts are true, the report´s authors said, millions could lose their livelihoods.
