Jenin camp children suffer from serious psychological trauma after the attack

Many institutions and events are active in the Jenin camp, to provide psychological support and social guidance to children who were directly affected by the Israeli aggression that targeted them, and led to the death of 4 of them, and the injury of a number of others, but there is no child in the camp who was not harmed or subjected to serious repercussions due to The Israeli war machine and the serious violations by the occupation soldiers that put them at risk and imposed harsh and difficult conditions on them, which affected their lives and education.

The road to UNRWA schools located on the western outskirts of the camp, was destroyed by the bulldozers of the occupation and mine sweepers, but the most dangerous thing, according to Kifah Al-Amouri, the director of the Center for Women’s Activity, “the scenes that the students see on their way, of destruction, burning, shelling and devastation in every corner and corner, so that the images that did not leave them are repeated in front of them All the time, when their homes are stormed and bombed, and a brother, relative or neighbour is arrested, killed or wounded.”

She added, "Everything on the way towards schools increases the pain and suffering of our children, who are already suffering from trauma and difficult conditions, from the repercussions of the aggression. Even today, there are female students who refuse to return to school and attend school due to the severity of fear and anxiety."

Despite the return of work and the reopening of UNRWA schools after a period of strike, students, especially female students, are still suffering from the effects of aggression. The teacher, Umm Faris, told Al-Quds.com: “The situation inside the classroom is difficult and painful. It is very low, and the prevailing talk about what happened during the bombing, how they stormed the houses and escaped from the missiles.. There are female students who suffer from a difficult psychological condition, and others who are haunted by anxiety and tension, and schools are on alert to provide plans to save students and their lives.”

At this time, it took a whole week to convince the 13-year-old student, Manal, to return to school, and her mother says, "Since we were expelled from our homes while we were barefoot, and our house was bombed and destroyed, and watching people screaming and children crying, she does not know any meaning of stability and sleep, her food is scarce, and she refuses to leave The house, and whenever we tell her about school, she cries.. My child's life collapsed, and we brought her classmates home and a psychologist until she agreed to go to school, but I feel that her life is in danger."

All that children and school students suffer in the Jenin camp is a dangerous and destructive reaction, as described by the social expert, Dr. Iyad Abu Bakr, stressing that the quick solution is a comprehensive and urgent national plan, because what happened during the occupation’s crimes is a devastating catastrophe, especially for children.

In an interview with Al-Quds.com, Abu Bakr explained that the scenes and tragedies experienced by children, especially students, during the aggression and bombing, had a clear psychological effect on mental health directly, indicating that the traumatic and affecting situations that children were exposed to would lead to disorders called "what After the trauma,” in which fear increases, and the child experiences “withdrawal” symptoms, such as involuntary urination, anger, anxiety, and tension, all of which result from the trauma and the painful scenes that passed in front of the child, such as manifestations of oppression, house demolitions, and murder.

Abu Bakr, an associate professor of social work at Al-Quds Open University, explained that the effects are getting more dangerous for children who see difficult and shocking images with their own eyes, and the most prominent effects are: anxiety, aggression, and psychological and internal conflict.

He added: "The danger and fear for the child is intensified, if he sees someone of his family, a relative of a friend or a neighbor, being subjected to aggression or oppression, and cannot help him or get rid of him, so a conflict arises between his inability and his motive to take revenge on those who practice this aggression, and this is a dangerous aspect that has serious repercussions." .

And he continued: The feelings that the child student is forced to suppress, create for him nightmares, pains, symptoms and unconscious behavior, in addition to the lack of focus and influence on the simplest matters of his life.

In the camp, the parents complained about the reluctance of some of their children to interact with their peers and their distance from life and people, as it was observed in schools, a state of isolation among some students, and this is considered, according to the social expert Abu Bakr, the other side of the effects of the aggression of the occupation on the social aspect of children, which is increasing more among students.

Abu Bakr points out that the children are no longer able to return to their normal lives because of the Israeli aggression.

The social expert focuses on the seriousness of the health effects on the child and his behavior, whether it is severe injury, or by bullets, gas and missiles, all of which, he says, "have repercussions and impact on the psychological, physical and mental aspects, i.e. a physical and psychological effect, and all of these have serious consequences... Psychological effects It is more dangerous and deeper than the physical because it is not exposed, and it leads to a trauma that may take a long time, especially when witnessing traumatic events such as killing, bombing and arrest.”

In light of what the expert Abu Bakr considers to be serious violations of international laws and norms, which the occupation practiced in a flagrant manner without observing the most basic standards through repression, collective punishment, expulsion, and execution, he considered that immediate and urgent action is required from all official and popular socialization agencies, to monitor those affected and make a real diagnosis of the events. , to provide the required intervention in times of crisis as an important factor, such as sheltering the displaced and providing all requirements for a safe living for families, especially children.

He stressed the need to start implementing a rapid integrated plan and first aid intervention to save and support the children of Jenin camp, in which all relevant official, popular and professional institutions that work in the field of health and psychological and social intervention participate, in order to thwart the occupation’s plans to destroy the new generation, especially the students.
