Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei said it welcomed the "move taken by the German government to create an equal footing for 5G providers."
According to German media reports, Berlin has announced rules on the safe construction and operation of the country´s telecommunications networks, and has not banned Huawei, a world-renowned provider of telecommunications equipment and services.
The Berlin move was seen as a disregard for a campaign by the US government, which wants its allies not to allow Huawei equipment in new-generation communications networks.
Although it offered no evidence that Huawei had done the wrong thing, the United States is threatening its allies to reduce intelligence sharing if they allow Huawei in their communications networks. But the move by Germany, the EU´s largest economy, shows that Washington´s pressure may not work.
In a statement, Huawei praised Berlin´s "realistic and normative move", saying it was of paramount importance in addressing the challenges facing cybersecurity in the world.
The Chinese technology giant Huawei has a history of more than 30 years, which has seen a keen security record, including many years of work with 45 of the 50 largest telecommunications companies in the world.
