Guterres and Blinken welcome the ceasefire in Gaza

 United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the ceasefire agreement that ended three days of Israeli bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip , which resulted in the death of 44 Palestinians, including 15 children and four women, and the injury of 360 others. In addition, a large number of civilian homes were destroyed.


The Secretary-General´s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric, said in a statement that the Secretary-General "is deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries, including children, from the air strikes in Gaza," expressing his "deepest condolences to the victims of the violence and their loved ones."


Dujarric added that the Secretary-General commends Egypt for its efforts in close coordination with the United Nations to help restore calm, stressing that the Secretary-General "calls on all parties to abide by the ceasefire." The commitment of the United Nations to achieving a two-state solution based on relevant UN resolutions, international law and previous agreements, and the importance of restoring a political horizon.


In turn, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said, "The United States welcomes the agreement to end hostilities Sunday and restore calm in Gaza and Israel." According to what he said.


"The agreement will provide a welcome respite for Israeli and Palestinian civilians and allow the delivery of essential fuel and other supplies to Gaza, and we express our condolences to the families of the civilians who lost their lives or were injured," he added.


Blinken also expressed the United States´ deep gratitude for Egypt´s tireless efforts to help broker this agreement, praising the important roles that Qatar, UN Special Envoy Wencesland, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority have played in recent days.


And in the coming months we will continue to work with partners to improve the quality of life for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as Palestinians and Israelis deserve to live in safety and security and enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity, and democracy .


In turn, the Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, expressed that in the Security Council session expected on Monday afternoon, the Palestinians will put the international community in front of their responsibilities to implement what they say about the Israeli aggression against the Palestinians and the destruction of their lives without regard to international humanitarian standards.
