Germany on Monday commemorated the victims of the Berlin Wall 57 years ago.

A memorial service is scheduled to be held in a dead neighbourhood in Berlin, followed by the laying of wreaths and candles to commemorate the victims in the main wall monument in Berlin today.

The former eastern German communist leadership, headed by Walter Ulbrecht, began construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, and the fence, which has been in place for some 155 kilometers, has been dividing the city for more than 28 years. Germany´s split with the fall of the fence ended on November 9, 1989.

According to scientific studies, at least 140 people died at the Berlin Wall by the communist regime in former East Germany.

Some 327 people from eastern and western Germany died at the internal border between the two Germans, over 1,400 kilometers.
