Two people were killed and 15 injured on Tuesday when an explosive device exploded in a popular market in Sadr City, east of Baghdad, an Iraqi Interior ministry source said.
The source, who asked not to be named, told Xinhua that "an explosive device planted on the roadside in the al-Sadr City´s al-Muraidi popular market was blown up before noon today, killing two civilians instantly."
Fifteen civilians were injured in the blast and were taken to hospital for treatment, he added.
The explosion also caused material damage to a number of market shops, the source said.
He noted that the security forces cordoned off the site of the blast and prevented M23 in anticipation of further attacks.
The Iraqi capital has been witnessing attacks and bombings, despite heavy security measures taken by Iraqi forces in various parts of Baghdad.
