Archaeologists have discovered a 200-year-old missing city on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa, once inhabited by more than 10,000 people.
In the past, the great city of Quinning was thought to have been made up of old stone huts, but three decades of complex research finally revealed that it was a city of 800 homes.
The ancient site beneath dense vegetation was found at Sukerbozern National Park, using advanced laser technology, where archaeologists have adopted billions of lasers to penetrate the vegetation and recreate a digital image of how Quinning appeared in the past.
Quinning, believed to have disappeared in the wake of civil strife, reached its peak between the 15th and 19th centuries, extending over an area of ​​20 km.
The discovery for archaeologists is an exciting window on the past of the region, which means "it will fill a huge historical gap, especially for South Africa, because we know that pre-colonial history in South Africa does not have a written record," according to Vern Imbali Secuánha, The team of archaeologists conducted the research under the supervision of the University of Witwatersrand.
