Churches demand radical transformation in Germany´s arms export policy

Berlin _ Agencies

Churches in Germany have sharply criticized the German government for its arms export policy, demanding a radical shift in the policy.

The Church and joint Development Conference on Monday, in Berlin in particular, criticized the government´s approval for the export of patrol boats to Saudi Arabia.

The Conference stated that the participation of these boats in the naval blockade contrary to international law against Yemen could not be ruled out.

The German government shares its arms exports in the "humanitarian catastrophe" in Yemen, the director of the Catholic Bishops ´ office in Berlin, Bishop Carl Euston, said, adding that the assessment of the ruling coalition´s performance in the arms policy was contrary to expectations.

Germany´s ruling coalition includes the Christian Alliance, which is affiliated with Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Social Democratic Party.

Saudi Arabia is leading an international military alliance in Yemen to fight the Huthi rebels.

On the backdrop of the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a critic of the kingdom at his consulate in Istanbul, the German government has decided to stop arms exports to Saudi Arabia in full at the moment.

Euston demanded a permanent halt to arms exports to Saudi Arabia.
