After retiring from his post at the United Nations in 2016, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is still interested in global changes and committed to advancing international cooperation.
In an exclusive interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of a conference held last Thursday and Friday in Hangzhou, capital of east China´s Zhejiang Province, Pan, who is currently chairman of the POAU Forum, shares visions of the causes and repercussions of the world´s problems today.
He called on the international community to strengthen multilateral cooperation and share experiences on regional cooperation, governance and sustainable development.
He explained that today´s world is undergoing major changes, leading to a serious lack of certainty and new risks.
"When leaders don´t care about the unity of the people and the unity of nations, they pay more attention to political propaganda," he said, adding, "Sometimes they exploit their rhetoric to fuel anger and hatred, so people have no certainty about their future."
Leaders should not create walls between people and nations, but must build bridges between people.
"I call on world leaders to go beyond their community and beyond their country and look forward to global prosperity and shared prosperity," he added.
He also stressed the important role of young people in building a better world. After retiring from the United Nations, he continued to seek to strengthen global citizenship among young people.
It was important for every citizen, especially young people, to have clearer visions of the future of our world, because they would lead our global community, the global leaders.
