Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee, said on Monday that Nauru´s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel´s capital was "illegal and immoral".
"Nauru´s decision is an insult to the international community, its laws and resolutions and a blatant attack on the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people," Ashrawi said in a statement on Thursday.
It called on the international community to "work to rein in Nauru and Honduras, which decided to open a diplomatic mission in Jerusalem, and to stand in the face of these irresponsible and hostile decisions towards the Palestinian people and to compel them to adopt positions consistent with international law on the Palestinian issue."
Ashrawi pointed out that "the greed of the leadership of these two countries with Israeli funds is the motive for taking these provocative and illegal steps, and it was a price in return for their vote against the rights of our people at the United Nations."
"The dangerous steps confirm the partnership and support of Honduras and Nauru for the crimes of the occupying power and their absolute support for the illegal annexation of occupied Jerusalem."
Ashrawi called on Arab and Islamic countries to implement the resolutions of Arab and Islamic summits in this regard, including severing all relations with these two countries.
The Republic of "Nauru," the smallest island nation in the world recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and its intention to open an embassy in the holy city, Israeli public radio reported today.
The radio quoted Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz, welcoming the move, considering it important after the historic recognition of US President Donald Trump, Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The announcement came shortly after Honduran President Juan Orlando Arnands Alberto announced his intention to open his country´s trade mission next week in Jerusalem, saying it would be a recognition that the city is Israel´s capital.
Israel occupied the eastern part of Jerusalem in 1967 and has not been recognized by the international community.
