Al-Khodari: More than 300 thousand unemployed workers in Gaza

Jamal Al-Khudari, head of the People´s Committee to confront the blockade in the Gaza Strip, said today, Friday, that more than 300,000 workers in the Gaza Strip are unemployed, and their conditions make it more difficult to view the siege and the measures to confront the Corona epidemic, especially during the month of Ramadan and its requirements.

In a press statement on the occasion of International Labor Day, which falls on the first of May of each year, Al-Khudari stated that the Corona pandemic, the Israeli siege and closure, the difficult living conditions and the collapsing economic situation, meet with workers in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Khudari pointed to the absence of realistic practical solutions and the disregard by the international community of the catastrophic humanitarian situation experienced by two million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, calling for effective and serious Arab, Islamic and international relief for workers in Palestine in general and the Gaza Strip in particular, through trade unions.

Al-Khudari appealed to the World Federation of Workers to have a role and contributions in the relief of workers in Palestine in general and the besieged Gaza Strip in particular.

"The workers are skilled and have proven their strength and competence at different times and stages, in construction and development, and they had - and still are - a prominent role in this field, but the difficult circumstances, the closure of factories and the lack of job opportunities is what made them this way," he said.

He pointed out that the workers are waiting for the appropriate opportunity to return to work and construction, and to perform their role honestly and professionally.

Al-Khudari stressed that the main entrance and gate to end the ongoing siege for the fourteenth year in a row is to lift it permanently, open crossings and allow freedom of import and export, as this is the guarantor of the return of workers and construction and the improvement of the economic situation.
