The Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) said Thursday that the number of illiterate Palestinians over the age of 15 reached 95, 000, or 3.3 percent of the population.

The illiteracy rate has dropped from 13.9 percent compared to 1997, the census said in a press release on the occasion of World Literacy Day next Saturday.

The male illiteracy rate was 1.7 per cent, while in 2017 it was 5.0 per cent female.

Data show that more than half of illiterate adults aged 65 and over are 34.6 percent, while in the 45-64 age group, 4.5 percent, and 1.3 percent in the 30-44 age group, while among young people 15-29 years, 0.6 percent for the same year.

Illiteracy rates in Palestine are among the lowest in the world, with the illiteracy rate among individuals being 15 years and over in the Arab States at 24.8% in 2016, according to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics.

The universal rate of illiteracy among individuals was 15 years and 13.8 per cent.

During its fourteenth General Conference in 1966, the Arab educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) decided to make September 8 September of every year a World Literacy day.

The organization was established in July July 1970 as one of the organizations of the League of Arab States concerned with the preservation of Arab culture and is based in Tunisia.
