The US military said on Wednesday it had successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile called the "Minetman III" after it was launched from the Vandenberg base in California.
The missile was fired at 0113 local time (1313 GMT) and traveled 6,750 kilometers before landing in the Kwajalan area of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, the Air Force said.
"The test showed that the United States´ nuclear deterrent is solid, flexible, ready and well-adapted to address the threats of the 21st century and to reassure our allies," the US Air Force Command said in a statement.
The US military said the test was "not a response to global events or regional tensions."
North Korea on Wednesday fired what appeared to be a sea-to-surface ballistic missile, South Korea´s military command said, a day after it announced the holding of working talks on the nuclear issue between Washington and Pyongyang next Saturday.
The United States has spent years and billions of dollars on developing technologies to deal with a ballistic missile heading toward its territory.
