Washington hopes the Taliban will "fulfill" their promises on human rights

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said Tuesday that the United States hopes the Taliban will "keep up" on its human rights promises.

"If the Taliban say they will respect the rights of their citizens, we expect them to honor that commitment," Price said at a press conference.

Hours earlier, Taliban insurgents said in their first press conference in the Afghan capital that they would "allow women to work within the framework of respecting the principles of Islam."

"Words are important, they can be reassuring, they can be symbolic, but what we seek is actions," Price added.
