Twitter confirmed that it will hand over the official account of the US President to Joe Biden on the day of his inauguration, even if the current President Donald Trump does not acknowledge his defeat in the elections.
"Twitter is actively preparing to support the transfer of White House institutional accounts on January 20, 2021," the social networking site said in a statement to AFP.
"As we did when you move the presidency in 2017, this process is done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records Administration."
Under the process, all tweets on the account of the president, first lady, vice president, and other official accounts will be archived.
The accounts will be completely closed and transferred to Biden, his wife and members of his administration on the day of the inauguration.
Trump, who has yet to admit his defeat in the November 3 elections, relied heavily on Twitter to build his position as a politician, publish his positions and announce his policies later as president, although he usually uses his personal account, which is followed by 88 million subscribers compared to the 32 million who follow the president´s account. the official.
Like the White House account and other official accounts, the president´s official account is mainly used to re-post Trump´s tweets that he sends on his personal account.
Since the last presidential election, Twitter has added warning messages to many of the tweets that Trump posted, while the latter continues to confirm his victory and insist that Biden´s victory was the result of widespread fraud, without providing clear evidence of this.
For his part, Joe Biden does not use Twitter to the same extent, as he posted fewer than 7,000 tweets to his 19 million subscribers, compared to 58,000 tweets published by Trump.
