The Vatican on Monday stressed the revival of the peace process between the Palestinians and Israelis, a two-state solution and the preservation of the identity of Jerusalem.
This was made in a statement published by the Holy See Press House, following the reception of Pope Francis I of President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday at the Vatican´s Holy Palace, the Vatican Radio reported.
During the talks, the process of reconciliation within the Palestinian people, as well as the efforts to reactivate the Israeli-Palestinian peace processes and to reach a two-state solution, and hope for a renewed commitment by the international community in answering the aspirations, were addressed of the two peoples.
The statement said that special attention was given to the status of Jerusalem, highlighting the importance of recognizing and preserving the identity of the Holy City and its universal value for the three Abrahamic faiths.
Other conflicts in the Middle East and the need to promote peace and dialogue with the contribution of religious groups to combat all forms of extremism and fundamentalism were also addressed, the statement said.
