UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday expressed concern over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu´s intention to annex the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea in the occupied West Bank.
In a statement, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said that such steps, if implemented, would constitute a serious violation of international law.
"It will be devastating to the possibility of reviving peace negotiations in the region and seriously undermine the possibility of implementing a two-state solution," the spokesman said.
He noted that the United Nations remains committed to supporting the Palestinians and Israelis to settle the conflict on the basis of relevant UN resolutions, the Madrid reference, and in line with previous agreements between the Israeli government and the PLO, and to achieve the vision of two states living side by side in peace and security, within recognized borders.
