The Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Robert Mardini, began his first visit to the Gaza Strip in 4 years, while US lawmakers called for more pressure on the occupation to allow the entry of supplies and reconstruction.
Mardini began his visit to the Gaza Strip - which he reached through the "Beit Hanoun - Erez" crossing, in the north of the Strip, with an inspection tour of the areas that were bombed by the Israeli occupation during its recent escalation on Gaza.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said that its Director-General will be briefed during his visit on the needs of the population of the most affected sector.
Mardini´s visit to the region will last for 3 days, during which he will visit Gaza, the West Bank and the southern occupied territories.
He urged the Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross, to find a political solution to prevent a recurrence of the violence that occurred last month across the border of the Gaza Strip.
"It´s really heartbreaking...to see and hear who paid the price for this escalation, women, children and civilians who were living safely in their homes and found themselves trapped in the destruction that we see behind us," Robert Mardini told Reuters.
"I hope this will be the last time I come to see the results and the humanitarian consequences of a new cycle of violence and escalation," he added.
